Salmon fishing in Anchorage...

The Salmon are only just starting to run and it's a good few weeks late. After running the gauntlet of all the predators in the river and the Pacific, avoiding the commercial fishing boats and struggling up stream, just before the spawning ground are Alaskan's in waders trying to snag Salmon with a 3 barbed hook.

They call it fishing but it ain't. The fish aren't feeding so the drill appears to be to randomly cast a lure into the teaming river and hopefully annoy a fish that will snap at the hook and get caught. Snagging a fish in the side or fin is not permitted so fish are dragged out with torn fins and gashed sides and then thrown back. Doesn't make sense to me although they only have a few days left to live anyway.

Remind me to leave Alaska before the end of the run. Apparently the whole place stinks of rotting fish :-)
